This year elétrico hosts Catarina Silva, a local hero rapidly turning herself into a household name in Portugal’s electronic music scene. Dedicated to music of varying structures and colours, her selections are often surprising and capricious in style and influenced by techno as well as tribal and deep house. By her own admission, music is a system of symbols, where each is free to interpret the message being conveyed. 2022 has been her year of consolidation in the club scene and now our time has come to hear her out.

Julian Veniel was born in Paris, and his career, faithful to the music that fills his soul, takes almost 25 years and makes him one of the main names of the French “underground scene”. He has a monthly residency since 1997 at the Rex Club under the name “Bass Culture”. This concept would become his own record label – Bass Culture Records – in 2009. D’Julz’s productions began in the 1990s and it is imperative to mark the records in labels as Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings, Steve Bug’s Systematic Recordings or Anja Schneider’s Mobilee Records. D’julz chooses the music in July in Porto, at Elétrico!

Returning to our roster of DJs after last year’s warm-up edition is David Moreira, who incidentally is also our copywriter and loathes autobiographies. Practically born in the club scene (his mother owned a nightclub and several bars throughout the 90s), he transitioned from the dance track to the DJ booth relatively late in life, but having encountered that passion, he never let go again. Completely devoted to the Afro-American culture that originated house and techno, he constantly exalts the importance of Detroit, and it is from this city, with some touches of Chicago, Berlin and Rome, that he finds the gems that fill the record bag that he wants to share with you.

Diana Oliveira was born in Lisbon, grew up in Braga, but it was in the underground circuit of Porto that this ‘Kadupul’ flowered. Diana is the striker at RDZ Music Agency, resident DJ at Industria Club, and its exquisite taste, coupled with the charismatic presence, take us on an intimate journey, from the most sensitive and profound fields of House to the most hypnotic sounds and grooves of Techno. In July, at the Elétrico garden.

We’re thrilled to welcome DJ Koze to elétrico. How to summarize a career that since 1989 has seen his writing, arrangement, and production present in well over 100 records? It’s an ungrateful task to describe the genius behind tracks like XTC, Knock Knock!, Pick Up and ground-breaking remixes of Caribou, Herbert, Moderat and Mount Kimbie to name a few. A pop icon in his own right, with credentials as solid as any king of the underground, it is safe to say that there is a whole world to be found in DJ Koze’s music, and we need only enjoy the journey…

London based musician, composer and producer Sam Shepherd began Floating Points in 2008 upon the release of several white-label singles. Shepherd formed Eglo Records in 2009 with his own early highlights for the label including cuts ‘Vacuum Boogie’ and ‘ARP3’ leading to increasingly spacious and musical releases ‘Sais’, ‘King Bromeliad’, and ‘Nuits sonores’.
Shepherd released his breakout, esteemed debut ‘Elaenia’ in 2015 on his label Pluto Records. He composed and recorded the album, which bridges the gap between dance music and his formative classical roots. 2017 saw Shepherd put out ‘Reflections – Mojave Desert’, a short film and soundtrack featuring tracks recorded in the Mojave Desert, and ‘Ratio’; an epic track bordering on 19-minutes that harks back to his earlier dance floor focussed releases. Shepherd followed in 2019 with the equally lauded ‘Crush’ which earned him Best New Music reviews (Pitchfork) and led to his biggest headline show to date at London’s Printworks.
‘Promises’, Floating Points’ latest album, is a continuous 46 minute piece composed by Shepherd featuring Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra. Released in March 2021, it has been hailed as “one of the greatest modern jazz albums” (Resident Advisor) and received critical acclaim worldwide from the likes of The New York Times and The Guardian.
Shepherd has nurtured the Floating Points name into one renowned for ambitious and forward-thinking DJ sets. His love for discovering records from around the world is reflected in his eclectic DJ sets which range from an hour to all night long. The “explosive” moments during one of his sets usually occur when he throws together unexpected genres, for the very simple reason that he gets excited about wanting to “hear this record, really loud, now!” and then puts the needle on.

In another debut for elétrico, this edition will feature the legendary Francesco Del Garda. The DJ’s DJ if there ever was one, the man with the most coveted record bag in the business transcends genres and expectations so frequently that copywriters cower away in fear of labelling him or confining his sound to a musical genre. What you shouldn’t expect is any incoherence or absurdity in his sound, because it’s the work of a meticulous mason, and judging by the reactions of his crowds and the dramatic inflation of any record he touches, the construction materials he pulls out of his bag must be pure gold.

Helena Guedes is a Porto native and she started spinning records three years ago. The short career of DJ, contrasts with a life running for the groove. Music lover by profession, found in DJing the perfect hobby to show the world the music that fills her soul. She grew up listening to Soul, Disco and Boogie of the 70s and 80s, and Hip Hop, Acid Jazz and Broken Beat that emanated in the 90s from London. She played in practically every club in town and this summer, she premieres at festivals like Serralves in Festa, Electrico, Lisb-On and Southern Soul Festival (Montenegro).

Founded in 1987 by Detroit techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson, Inner City was one of the first bands to take electronic dance music to global charts. Five times in the first place of Billboard and seven times in the Top 40 of the UK Chart, with super-classics such as Good Life and Big Fun, that became a major influence to British bands like Soul II Soul and Massive Attack. Originally with Paris Grey as lead singer, Inner City has now been reinvented, thirty years later, and Kevin Saunderson now joins his younger son, Dantiez, and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an. Inner City, live, in July at Elétrico!

João Dinis is the founder of Primeira Linha, the Porto promotor that specializes in the most eclectic groove, and which has brought to Portugal the finest names of Brazilian music. In addition to the vast musical culture, he owns a collection of records that makes the Gods jealous. João has the homeric mission to choose the first songs of this edition of Electrico Festival!

João Tenreiro is from Porto and grew up literally surrounded by records. At an early age was already listening to Kruder & Dorfmeister, Fila Brazillia, Moodymann or Idjot Boys. Is an avid vinyl collector, started spinning them at Passos Manuel in 2012, and up to clubs like Industria Club or Lux and festivals like Lisb-On Sonoro, it was a short trip. And he is again on the move: João at Elétrico, in July!

Kerri Chandler is an institution. He was born into a family of musicians and began attending the revolutionary New York clubs of the 1980s at the age of 13. He has been a DJ for over 30 years and produced the first EP – Super Love / Get It Off – for Atlantic Records in 1991. Following, he released five albums, more than a hundred singles/EPs and three founded 3 record labels – Madhouse, Madtech and most recently, 2016, Kaoz Theory. He played 7 straight hours on his last visit to Porto, in what might have been the most epic night of the season at Industria Club, and he’s back in July for Elétrico.

Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister comprise one of the great new additions to Elétrico’s lineup. Their story is familiar to anyone who recalls that magic era where their iconic DJ-Kicks mix would play in any record shop worth its speakers (it still does) or when it was hard to find any car that wasn’t blaring out G-stoned, two of the gorgeous compilations these artists put together that helped to define the zeitgeist of the mid-to-late 90s. Since then, records were declared dead only to resurrect shortly after, and MP3 players meant the 3mm jack cable replaced the pens we kept in our cars and back pockets to unwind tapes, but these two never stopped. In Portugal, they’ve helped shape an entire generation of artists and music lovers, that joined the hordes of people that followed them everywhere they went. In July we bid them welcome to our garden, and we can’t wait.

Leo Cruz is the true definition of being underground. Without big marketing stunts, it’s the music that speaks louder. An avid vinyl collector, he’s been playing in every club of Portugal, and is now at Electrico Festival to share with us the best selection of Funk, Soul and Disco, peppered with the best that the Chicago House has to offer.

Levon Vincent was born in Houston, Texas, grew up in New York but is currently living in Berlin. He began djing during his adolescence, he experienced closely the “boom” of House, and at the turn of the century, ended up dedicating himself 100% to electronic dance music. It was at the Halcyon Record Shop that it all started. There he met Anthony Parasole, with whom he would found Deconstruct, and Jus-Ed, who would play a key role in his globalization as a producer, due to his Underground Quality Records. In 2008, Levon Vincent started his own record label – Novel Sound – where he released more than twenty EPs, two albums, and with them came the recognition of his work as essential and revitalizing for the New York House and Techno scene.

Another highlight of this year’s elétrico is the grand debut of Luisa. Judging not only by her hectic schedule but also by the quality and popularity of her mixes, you’d be forgiven for thinking she’s been around for long. Though firmly established in the vanguard of Lisbon’s music scene, where her careful selections can be heard in all the major clubs as well as her Prospects show on collect radio, Luisa is a relatively recent phenomenon. Following up on a year of growth and memorable shows, her appearance at elétrico is an event for which we hold great expectations.

Magazino is the striker of Bloop Recordings, the record label and event producer based in Lisbon, that brings joy and culture to dance floors all the way from Braga to Portimão. More than 20 years on the road, divided between Del Costa and Magazino, made the former young goalkeeper of Vitoria de Setúbal, one of the country’s most irreverent activists and disc-jockeys. But, more cleary, it all boils down to this: Never trust a DJ who does not dance. And Magazino dances like there’s no tomorrow. Hops on Elétrico, on the July 27th!

Ostgut Ton, another by TON-A, and several EPs on the same Ostgut Ton, 50Weapons and by his MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records). In the dj booth? There will still be a tropical storm, cyclone or hurricane that lives up to that name, and it is unmistakably one of the main characters of the several times named film for the “Oscars” of this movement, called Berghain! Back on stage, in Oporto, in July, at Elétrico!

Having had a first taste of elétrico in last year’s warm-up version, Maria Callapez was an obvious choice for this year’s edition of the festival. With a solid background in classical music, and notoriously careful with her work, Maria Callapez’s sound sails somewhere between Ambient and Deep Techno both as a DJ and as a producer. Extraordinarily gifted and confident for someone of her ripe age, she has spent the year dazzling her audiences with both thumping, powerful techno and abstract ambient symphonies. This ability to fully absorb her audiences in musical oblivion has made her one of the most exciting names for the future of Portuguese electronic music, and if there was ever a stage that merited her visit, we’d like to think it’s the one we’ve set up for her, here in Porto.

Maria Gambina is one of the most respected Portuguese fashion designers. The refined taste she has for her productions, is mirrored in every aspect of her everyday life, as well as in the music she collects. In clothes, as in music, it’s just beautiful patterns! She will be sharing them with us, at Elétrico Festival, in July!

Matthew Herbert is forty-seven years old, is English and one of the geniuses of contemporary music. Twenty-three self-titled albums, plus half a dozen like Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy and Wishmountain, and countless EPs ranging from classic labels such as Phono and Clear, to more recent ones such as Curle or Hypercolour. It is more than twenty years of music defined by experimental aesthetics, and the balance between outrageous sampling and groove for the dance floor, in which also relies the bedrock of his own label, Accidental, that Matthew founded in 2000, and counts close to one hundred and fifty releases. Having Matthew Herbert playing records for us at Parque da Pasteleira, in July, will be one of the most awaited moments of this Elétrico Festival!

Lisbon based DJ, musician and producer Moullinex thrives in intersections: science and art, spontaneity and formalism, organic and artificial, isolation and community. This idea crystallized in music that can perfectly live within the boundaries of the dancefloor and still allow for deep introspection on headphones. From melancholic electronic textures to exuberant house and disco, his productions have seen him being praised by his peers and audiences globally.
Luis Clara Gomes spent his formative years looking at the stars. From drawing galactic maps and sketches of imaginary spacecraft as a child to doing research in astronomy as an adult, his obsession with science was the stepping stone into electronic music, where he first stumbled into electronic soundtrack maestros such as Vangelis and Giorgio Moroder and later Air, Stevie Wonder and brazilian MPB.
Under the Moullinex alias he first started doing remixes for Cut Copy, Sebastien Tellier, Royksopp and Robyn, among many more, while consistently releasing quality originals through his own label Discotexas, alongside Xinobi, his partner in crime. Three albums ensued, “Flora”, “Elsewhere” and “Hypersex”, establishing Moullinex as a versatile, subtle and multi-layered producer.

Priku is another grand debut at this year’s elétrico. With a minimalist sound forged in the Sunwaves festival that brought him to prominence, Priku holds an enviable reputation as one of the world’s foremost maestro-composers of summer melodies. With the same curious complexity that has become a trademark of labels like All Inn Black or a:rpia:r, Priku channels the intensely reflective but inherently blissful vibe of the Romanian scene. A perfect fit for our party at the park.

One of the new additions to this year’s elétrico is Raresh. For more than a decade, he’s been one of the frontrunners of the influential minimal scene coming out of Bucharest. Known for hypnotic mixes that slowly but surely envelop his public in a dream state, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone capable of the work this artist does with two good turntables and a mixer, that’s why we are glad to be able to invite you to witness his work first hand.

Known for hypnotic mixes that slowly but surely envelop his public in a dream state, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone capable of the work this artist does with two good turntables and a mixer, that’s why we are glad to be able to invite you to witness his work first hand.
This year we welcome Roza Terenzi to elétrico for the very first time. Packed with momentum and skyrocketing demand for her music, Roza Terenzi has always aimed her sound at the cosmos, her sublime and otherworldly music being a bridge between what occurs here on earth and what we imagine happens beyond. A force to be reckoned with behind the decks and one of the busiest artists around, she’s found some time to come to Porto, where we expect her to make us pack our bags and board her ship towards another interstellar experience.

Rui Vargas is once again our guest at elétrico. Present in every edition, describing him as an artist can be a daunting task for anyone working in this area in Portugal. For many DJs, Club and festival goers and promoters alike, he has long been the pre-eminent figurehead of the electronic scene in Portugal. One would be wrong to assume he occupies this throne merely as a reward for his longevity, because beyond his tireless work and chameleon-like adaptability is an attribute that only a handful of DJ’s in the world can emulate, the ability to generate unforgettable moments. Will it be your first-time seeing Rui Vargas on stage? Chances are, it won’t, but one thing we know for sure is it won’t be like the last, it never is.

After blowing away the crowds that hit the town’s Industria Club to see him in February, Seth Troxler returns to Porto for a much-awaited re-launch of elétrico. Throughout the world there is maybe a handful of DJ’s with the creative dimension and freedom of Seth Troxler, equally, it’s difficult to picture anyone with the charisma and sheer power of attraction that he commands. A monumental headliner always committed to providing memorable shows, he’s another name that leaves no room for doubts, this edition of elétrico is one you can’t miss.

Theo Parrish was born in Washington, grew up in Chicago during the “big-bang” of House, and at the age of thirteen began to buy and mix records. From the influence of icons such as Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Hendrix and Miles Davis, and the mixing skills of pioneers like Ron Hardy, Larry Heard, Lil Louis and Frankie Knuckle, was born the ambition to push forward the movement, and produce dance music that blends Jazz, Soul, House and Techno, with loads of experimentalism. In more than thirty years of career, recorded seven original albums and founded four record labels – Sound Signature, Peacefrog, Sumerge and Ugly Edits. Theo Parrish comes to Elétrico in July for an extended three hours dj set!
